Proficiency and how long someone had been living with a second language mattered just as much as the count, more like a gradient than a switch. The team, led by Dr Lucia Amoruso of theBasque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language, scanned brain activity in hundreds of people from Spain’s Basque region who spoke between one and four languages, including combinations of Spanish, Basque, French, and English. They used those scans to build a model of what typical brain ageing looks like, then compared each person’s brain against it.

People who spoke two languages had brains that appeared around six years younger than people who spoke only one. Three languages tracked with about seven years younger, and four with around 13 years younger. Dr Amoruso said people who spoke more languages tended to have brains that looked younger than expected for their age, but the number of languages wasn’t the only factor. Higher proficiency and earlier acquisition of a second language were independently linked to more delayed brain ageing, which is what points to depth and duration of experience as the real driver, rather than a simple bilingual-or-not.

Note that this was a conference presentation, not yet a peer-reviewed journal publication, and the researchers describe it as an observational study: a pattern, not proof of cause.

How age of acquisition fits into that picture

Earlier acquisition was one of the factors feeding into that gradient, and it lines up with earlier, peer-reviewed research on brain development specifically. What this study doesn’t tell us yet

A couple of things are worth holding lightly. The sample was adults in Spain’s Basque region, not children, so this study alone can’t tell us how quickly any of this shows up in a young brain. The team has said future work will look at neurodegenerative conditions next, with younger populations likely to follow.
